ABOUT US

ABOUT Sierra Leone Relief

The Sierra Leone Relief Project began as a Lenten Project to collect and deliver emergency disaster food, water, and supplies to an estimated 1,200 children (many orphans) camped at St. Peter the Rock Catholic Church & School in Sierra Leone on the West Coast of Africa in 2002, following the bloody Diamond War.

It was the brainchild of Yarta B. Sesay Sr. from Houston, TX; a Sierra Leonean-American that became a Regional Project Manager of the Herculean task. Mr. Sesay recruited friend Mohammed Kargbo-Okorgie, also a Sierra Leonean-American living in Houston.

As we organized and planned our approach, President Kabbah of Sierra Leone sent a message to the diaspora via local newspapers: A Clarion Call for Help!

Jana Leys was appointed director of the project and together with Yarta Sesay and Mohamed Kargo Okorogie delivered two 40' and one 20’ containers of emergency disaster relief to save 1,200 orphans.

American volunteers and missionaries recruited five Sierra Leoneon volunteers that have been working with the communities they represent since 2004 as its Regional Social Workers.

SLR continues to supplement food supplies and shelter when possible; educational tuition assistance and limited medical assistance for multiple families and communities in Freetown and surrounding areas to this day in 2025.
